Access for Pedestrians on the George Walker Bush Motorway

The newly commissioned George Walker Bush Motorway constitutes part of the Accra-Tema Motorway and also functions as part of the larger Trans-West Africa Highway which runs from Aflao on the Ghana-Togo border to Elubo on the Ghana-Cote D’Ivoire border.
The Motorway also supports urban traffic movement within the Greater Accra Metropolitan Area. It will improve the efficiency of the road networks in and around Greater Accra and will reduce the bottlenecks that delay access to the International Airport and the Port of Tema.
The Millennium Development Authority (MiDA) wishes to inform all Ghanaians that the Motorway was designed in accordance with Ghana Highway Authority (GHA) Standards, incorporating the needs of Persons With Disability (PWD), in compliance with Sections 6 and 23 of the Persons with Disability Act, 2006 (Act 715)
The Motorway includes 2 Grade Separation Interchanges at the Dimples and Mallam Junctions, 6 Footbridges, 13 Bus Bays, 23 Minor Junctions, Bicycle Lanes and 2 Transport Terminals at Kokroko, near Mallam and at Abeka Lapaz.
In addition, it was designed with specific crossings, with safety features such as railings and ramps, provided along the road and at traffic intersections to enable all pedestrians, including PWDs to traverse the road safely.
Indeed, the traffic signals have been designed with a phase for pedestrians, including PWDs to cross the road at grade level. Pelican Crossing markings have also been provided on the road to ensure that vehicular traffic will make way for pedestrian traffic at specific intervals and times.
MiDA will continue to collaborate with all stakeholders, including the Ghana Highway Authority, National Road Safety Commission and the Ghana Police Service to monitor traffic and pedestrian use of the Motorway in order to find practical solutions to all legitimate concerns.
